I believe that God is a God of love, a God of grace, a God of forgiveness, a God of laughter, a God of acceptance . . . and a God of discipleship. He is a God who asks for only one thing from those of us who love Him--our lives. Not just our Sunday morning lives. Not just our ten minutes-a-night Bible study and prayer lives. Not just our Thursday night choir rehearsal or Wednesday night prayer meeting lives. God wants it all. And in exchange He gives us everything! The comfort that we are never alone. The joy that we are loved beyond imagining. The peace that we are His children forever and nothing can separate us from Him for all eternity! I believe God gives each of us the ability to tell His story in our own individual ways, with our very lives. For in him we live and move and have our being. (Acts 17:28, RSV)

I think the most revolutionary thing that Jesus taught his followers during His earthly ministry was a radical new understanding of who God was and how we could know Him. The Old Testament prophets taught of an avenging God who rewarded the good and punished the evil. The psalmist sang of a loving shepherd, or a benevolent protector. But Jesus, the only-begotten Son, taught us about Abba, His heavenly Father. And we're not talking about Father as some stern, strict, paternal disciplinarian. No, the Aramaic Abba means something entirely different. Probably the closest thing in contemporary English is Daddy, or Papa. And through Jesus we can enter into that kind of relationship. God is no longer the avenger, waiting to punish me when I fail. He is not just a shepherd or a protector--He is not just OUR FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN . . . He is Abba, my heavenly Papa. He adopted me, gave me His name, and made me a joint heir with Jesus! I think Paul says it best: This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It's adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike, "What's next, Papa?" We know who He is, and we know who we are: Father and children. And we know we are going to get what's coming to us--an unbelievable inheritance! (Romans 8:15- 17, The Message)
We hope you have the same kind of personal living relationship in your own life. If you would like to correspond with us about questions or crises in your own spiritual life, we would love to have the opportunity to share with you the love and passion we have found through our relationship with God.
